Home | Child Custody
A number of judges believe that a child should at all times be with its mother and this is even more frequent when the child is a girl or preteen. If you do not battle hard to achieve custody, there is a big chance that you could be reduced to only seeing your children at weekends, or worse, just the once a month. Some fathers think that if you allow the mother to achieve full custody first time round, that they can come back in a year or two and apply for joint custody, but this seldom ever works. Typically, your chances of custody diminish with the number of rounds in the battle. Generally, courts will not meddle with a custody agreement once it had been settled on, for fear of upsetting the child or children. It is crucial that fathers establish themselves before gaining custody. As soon as you lose custody, you hazard not having an active role in your child's life. Giving control to your ex-wife can be hazardous if the divorce was chaotic, as there have been many cases where mothers have twisted their children against their father. Your ex-wife will organize all aspects of the child's life that a father should have the right to make decisions on. When it comes to obtaining custody as a result of a divorce, and fighting for the preeminent interest of your children, you have to be willing to fight. There is no room for half measures. Choose an attorney who practices in the subject and inform yourself. Knowledge is power. Recognize how you can offer a stable environment, and be able to say this plainly and sensibly. Be ready for things to turn ugly, because it often does. Being livid at "the unjust legal system" and "your vindictive ex-wife" will get you nowhere. You have to be willing to give, but be ready to fight.
